This is a question I often receive from my social media coaching clients.
The answer is YES, BUT – only your brand. For small to midsized businesses – I can almost guarantee you that you are not the coolest kid on the block- and everything you say will not become a trend. What you can do is #hashtag your #brand.
In fact, you should hashtag your brand fairly often. Aside from that – use tools such as http://twitonomy.com/ to see what hashtags work well for your competitors – or http://hashtagify.me/ to find popular hashtags related to your industry and that are popular with your audience.
NOTE: This does not apply to events! You should always create hashtags for events and make sure to include it in all event programming, event signs, invites etc. I’ll talk about WHY in another post.
